Generally, the different types of present drains or scuppers show the following deficiencies in their use as well as in their maintenance due to:
The opening-controlled scupper constitutes great progress over the existing ones so far::
The opening-controled scupper is made up of a grating-drain of those which are generally found in public streets giving access to a manhole
The manhole is divided in two holes by means of a separating element (1) but connected by the lower zone with enough width or section so that the speed of water diminishes in case of torrential rains.
In the reception hole (2) and below the grating-drain, a filter (7) is to be found with supports in (8) to avoid any access of solid waste to the bottom of the manhole. Water once filtered is transferred to the drainage hole (3), where it has freedom of movement and a float or buoy inside (4) which goes up as a result of the water pressure coming from the reception hole, leaving all drainage capacity belonging to the section of the connection to the main canal ready and which closes the lower opening corresponding to the water entrance to the drainage hole when the water flow stops, preventing odors, insects, rodents and other animals from entering from the colector.
The float or buoy can have sferical, ellipsoidal and cylindrical shapes which might have as foundation sferical caps allowing the rotation over itself, avoiding it being enclosed inside the drainage hole and being able to return to its closing position
no matter the way the water flows. So that it can easily checked, any manhole can be used, located in the upper part of the drainage hole .
In order to avoid the small amount of water which can get into the upper part of the float and the botton of the manhole, once the rain has stopped, it has two small holes (6) at the bottom which drains directly to the ground.
Maintenance consists in extracting the filter from the grating-drain for its cleaning without the need to access the bottom of the manhole when trying to remove any solid waste.
